The Firm

Simon Smith, the principal of Taveners Solicitors, is a very experienced UK based company/commercial and technology lawyer with particular specialties in advising on corporate, intellectual property, competition and contract law for clients in a number of industry sectors including electronic publishing, mobile technology, IT/telecoms and biopharma/medtech. He also advises on the exploitation of new technologies in the greentech space. A frequent public speaker and writer, he has been described in the Legal 500 as “simply outstanding” and recently as “exceptionally strong”.

With a history of working both in the City of London and in major regional UK law firms, Simon has acted for some of the biggest, and some of the smaller, technology companies around, often working with in-house legal teams or offering clients a virtual in-house legal presence. Much of his work is international in nature, and he brings with him an extensive network of international contacts which are frequently used to the benefit of Taveners’ clients.

Simon can work alone or bring in extra resource as required, calling in lawyers from different disciplines (contentious employment, property) and, where needed, different countries around the world, from his wide network to assist. Simon also advises on complex contract and intellectual property disputes, working where appropriate with general litigation firms.

Legal training both to individual clients and industry bodies is also a significant part of Simon’s practice, in which he clarifies how contracts work and where the danger areas are in both standard and non-standard contractual terms. Simon also writes extensively on these issues.

Simon sits on the Laws Committee of the Licensing Executives Society (which advises government and others on intellectual property matters), is a past member of the BioIndustry Association Intellectual Property Advisory Committee, and is a member of the Society of Computers and Law.
